BAM's 2026 workshop and roundtable discussion focused on bilingualism and aging, exploring recent research and how it impacts speech-language pathology practice.
Dr. Arce Rentería is an Assistant Professor of Neuropsychology at the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain and the Department of Neurology at the Columbia University Medical Center. His research focuses on determining factors of reserve and resilience to cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) among racial/ethnic minorities both within the United States and abroad with an emphasis on understanding the role of bilingualism.
Dr. Regina Jokel received her doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Toronto and currently conducts clinical research in typical and atypical aging at Baycrest Academy for Research and Education. She is Associate Professor and Affiliated Scientist at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, where she teaches courses focused on speech and language disorders associated with aging.
Sonia Afanasieva is a Speech-Language Pathologist working at the McGill University Health Centre for the past 4 years. Her experience includes assessing and treating acquired communication and swallowing deficits in a multilingual setting.

Dr. Becky (Xi) Chen is a Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and Canada Research Chair in Literacy Development of Bilingual and Multilingual Children.
Dr. Guofang Li is a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Transnational/Global Perspectives of Language and Literacy Education of Children and Youth in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia.
Moderated by Dr. Monika Molnar, the panel featured our three speakers—Dr. Becky Chen, Dr. Guofang Li, and Besy Karantzoulis—alongside BAM PhD Candidate & SLP Emily Wood.

Dr. Elizabeth Peña, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, is a Professor in the School of Education at University of California, Irvine and author of the Bilingual English-Spanish Assessment.

CASLPO and Kate Perry, S-LP(C), Reg. CASLPO are clinicians with extensive experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and neurodevelopmental disorders at the Holland Bloorview Children's Hospital.
